POSITION DESCRIPTION
Job Title: Church Organist
- PURPOSE: The Organist is to play the church organ at the worship services of the Presbyterian Church of Radford and to accompany the Adult Choir. This is a part-time position in which the hours worked will vary, but should average 5 ½ hours per week.
- QUALIFICATIONS: Must be able to lead the choir and congregation musically by playing either the piano or the organ. The organ is the preferred instrument and if not proficient with this instrument, is expected to learn how to play the organ.
- ACCOUNTABILITY:
- Employment through the Session of the Presbyterian Church of Radford. With employment, salary and job performance recommended by the Worship Committee to the Human Resources Committee.
- RESPONSIBILITIES:
- To accompany the Adult Choir in regular practice and the congregation during the regular worship service.
- To select, practice and play the prelude, offertory and postlude of the regular worship services, turning in selected music to the church office for the bulletin by Thursday morning.
- To work with the Director of Music in planning, purchasing, practicing and presenting all music for the regular worship service.
- To find an organist substitute during vacations or in the case of illness. The substitute will receive an amount allocated in the current church budget.
- To report problems with the church organ and pianos to the church office.
- When available, play for funerals which are held in The Presbyterian Church of Radford throughout the year.
- EVALUATION:
All newly hired church staff will be evaluated after three months of employment by their associated committee in collaboration with members of the Human Resources Committee using the appropriate job description
Performance reviews will be conducted biennially by the Session and Human Resources Committee with input from the Worship Committee in accordance with the evaluation policy.

- Salary – paid semi-monthly

- Vacation – 2 “work” weeks annually (choir practice time and Sunday service time) with no carryover annually
- Salary reviews – biennially
- Resignation – 30 days notice required
